Cursor vs Windsurf: Which AI Code Editor Wins?

By The Bot Market

The AI code editor market has consolidated around two frontrunners: Cursor and Windsurf. Both are VS Code forks, both lean heavily on large language models, and both promise to make you a faster developer. But their approaches couldn't be more different. We used each as our sole editor for a full month across three production codebases to find out which one actually delivers.

The Core Difference

Cursor bets on deep codebase awareness. Its indexing engine maps your entire project, and every AI interaction — from tab completion to composer mode — draws on that context. The result is suggestions that feel like they come from someone who has read your entire codebase.

Windsurf takes a different path. It prioritises speed and simplicity, with a lighter indexing footprint and a focus on rapid inline completions. Where Cursor tries to understand your architecture, Windsurf tries to predict your next keystroke. For smaller projects and quick scripts, Windsurf often feels snappier. For larger, more complex codebases, Cursor's deeper understanding pays dividends.

The Verdict

There's no universal winner here. If you work primarily on large, long-lived codebases where context matters, Cursor is the better choice. If you value raw speed and work across many smaller projects, Windsurf's lighter touch may suit you better. Both are significant upgrades over a vanilla VS Code setup, and both are worth the subscription for professional developers.
